Los Angeles Must ‘Take Back Control of Covid-19,’ Mayor Eric Garcetti Says

Los Angeles County health officials warned in a Monday press conference that lax adherence to business reopening guidelines had led to an “explosion” of new COVID-19 cases. The area’s transmission rate began spiking over Memorial Day weekend, leading to “alarming increases in cases, positivity rates, and hospitalization,” Los Angeles County’s Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer said.

At this rate, officials predict the county could run out of hospital beds in two to three weeks and ICU beds could be filled sometime in July, even if the county reverses and shuts down businesses again. In light of this, L.A. County beaches will be closed over 4th of July weekend and fireworks displays have been banned. So far, more than 100,000 people have tested positive and 3,300 people have died in L.A. County from COVID-19.
