‘Abortion Isn’t a Human Right:’ Pompeo Touts ‘pro-life’ U.S. Foreign Policy

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told a gathering of Christian conservatives at the Family Leadership Summit that the Trump administration is pursuing a foreign policy that’s pro-life, pro-religious freedom and pro-national security.

He blasted the Chinese Communist government, saying it’s crushing freedom in Hong Kong and threatening freedom in Taiwan.

He also said the government is “forcing mass abortions and sterilization on Chinese Muslims in western China.”

“These are some of the most gross human rights violations we have seen. And I’ve referred to it as the stain of the century.”

Pompeo highlighted that the admistration has imposed sanctions and travel restrictions on China, and is revising agreements with Hong Kong in light of China’s crackdown on human rights there.

His remarks come two days after he announced the U.S. will impose travel bans on employees of the Chinese technology giant Huawei and other Chinese companies the U.S. determines are assisting authoritarian governments in cracking down on human rights, including in China’s western Xinjiang province.

Pompeo also said the Trump administration “has defended the rights of unborn like no other administration in history.”

He pointed to the administration’s reinstatement of the Mexico City Policy,” which blocks federal funding for non-governmental organizations that provide abortion counseling or referrals, or expand abortion services.

“Abortion, quite simply, isn’t a human right,” he said. It takes a human life.”
