Biden Easily Wins South Carolina Primary, Starts March to Nomination

President has little trouble dispatching Dean Phillips and Marianne Williamson in first official Democratic contest

Updated Feb. 3, 2024 7:51 pm ET

President Biden handily won the South Carolina Democratic primary on Saturday, marking his first appearance on the ballot this cycle as he clinched the state that revived his presidential campaign four years ago.

The outcome came as no surprise, with the Associated Press calling the race soon after polls closed. Biden’s only challenges came in the form of long-shot presidential bids by Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips and Marianne Williamson, a self-help author. Biden had nonetheless campaigned in South Carolina in recent weeks to shore up support among Black voters, a constituency that was crucial to his path to his party’s nomination and ultimately the White House in the 2020 election.
