WASHINGTON—Special counsel Jack Smith urged a federal judge Wednesday to fend off Donald Trump’s attempts to “inject politics” into the criminal case alleging he plotted to overturn the 2020 election results, taking particular aim at the former president’s claims that he is being subjected to a vindictive and selective prosecution.

In a court filing, Smith’s team asked U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan to prevent Trump and his defense lawyers from turning “the courtroom into a forum in which he propagates irrelevant disinformation.”
