Inflation eased slightly last month, likely keeping the Fed on course to pause rate increases at its next meeting. The consumer-price index rose 4.9% in April from a year earlier, down from March’s 5% increase.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq ended with gains of 0.4% and 1%, respectively, after release of the data, while the Dow lost 0.1%. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell.
