Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama says defense personnel needed to help maintain order after rivals claim they can form government

ADELAIDE, Australia—Fiji mobilized its military after the party of longtime leader Frank Bainimarama failed to win a majority in an election this month, a move that risks inflaming tensions in a Pacific nation that the U.S. has courted to counter China’s inroads in the region.

Mr. Bainimarama’s Fiji First party has yet to concede after the main opposition parties in Fiji, where four military coups have taken place in the past 35 years, this week formed a coalition to oust the incumbent government.
