Macron’s Majority in French Parliament at Risk in Neck-and-Neck Races

PARIS—French President Emmanuel Macron’s candidates for the National Assembly were running neck and neck with the forces of far-left firebrand Jean-Luc Mélenchon in the first round of voting Sunday, according to projections based on early ballot counts, putting the French leader at risk of losing the parliamentary majority that buttresses his pro-business agenda.

A projection by polling firm Harris Interactive estimated that Mr. Macron’s forces and Mr. Mélenchon’s coalition each garnered 25% of the nationwide vote. Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally won 19% of the first-round vote while the conservative Les Républicains and its allies garnered 11.5%, according to Harris Interactive.
