Before the season, Jordan Palmer, who is Josh Allen’s private quarterbacks coach, told me he thought Allen’s season would come down to his getting the ball in the final 5 minutes of the A.F.C. championship against the Kansas City at Buffalo. He got the round and the site a bit wrong. But the sentiment rings true. We’re setting up for another spectacular finish in the fourth quarter this weekend.

Kansas City and the Buffalo Bills are tied at 14 in the divisional round after Harrison Butker missed a 50-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.

Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen have gone throw-for-throw, foreshadowing what could be a thrilling finish at Arrowhead Stadium.

Mahomes is 13-of-19 passing for 114 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 49 yards and a score.

The offense has looked in sync — Mahomes has hit five different targets and running backs Jerick McKinnon and Clyde Edwards-Helaire have combined for 39 yards. All season, most teams have played Kansas City with heavy doses of zone coverage to negate the downfield strikes and explosive plays. Buffalo employed some of that strategy, it allowed Mahomes to scamper for a 34-yard gain to set up their first touchdown. On their next scoring drive, Mahomes took underneath throws to march down the field. The Bills’ defense stopped them near the goal line, but a holding penalty gifted Kansas City a fresh set of downs. Mahomes then sailed a pass to Byron Pringle, who completed a contested catch for a 2-yard score.

But Allen responded, needing only seven plays 75 yards to find receiver Gabriel Davis open in the end zone for an 18-yard touchdown. Allen is 15 of 18 for 113 yards and a touchdown, and has also run for 45 yards. The Bills have played aggressively, converting both of their fourth down attempts on the opening drive, which ended with a 2-yard touchdown from Devin Singletary.

Kansas City safety Tyrann Mathieu has been ruled out for the rest of the game and is in the concussion protocol, team officials said during the second quarter.

Mathieu’s head banged into the knee of a teammate in the first quarter. He soon jogged to the sideline to enter the blue medical tent, then went to the locker room.

Mathieu is a team captain and one of Kansas City’s best defensive players.

He joined the team in 2019 and was a key contributor to their Super Bowl run. Teammates said that he infused a hard-nosed, dogged attitude in the locker room. He is a three-time Pro Bowl selection and has been named to three All-Pro teams.

After almost every home team successfully defended their turf in the wild card round last weekend — all but the Cowboys, that is — the road teams have won three of the first four divisional round games this weekend, and all three by kicking walk-off field goals.

If the Buffalo Bills knock off Kansas City in the last of this weekend’s matchups, it will mark the first time since the 2015 season that the road teams swept a quartet of games in one weekend of the postseason.

In that year’s wild card weekend, Kansas City shut out the Texans in Houston, 30-0. Later that day, the Pittsburgh Steelers upended the host Cincinnati Bengals, 18-16. The following day, the Seattle Seahawks beat the Minnesota Vikings, 10-9, in frigid Minneapolis, and the Green Bay Packers knocked off the hosts in Washington, 35-18.

On Saturday, the Cincinnati Bengals shocked the top-seeded Tennessee Titans in Nashville, 19-16, on the last play of the game. The San Francisco 49ers repeated the feat in the evening game when Robbie Gould kicked a winning field goal as time expired to knock off the Packers in Lambeau Field.

Earlier Sunday, the Los Angeles Rams held on to beat the defending champion Buccaneers in Tampa, 30-27, after blowing a 24-point lead.

Now it’s the Bills’ turn to try to win on a playoff game on the road. They haven’t won a playoff game outside Buffalo since 1993, when they beat the Miami Dolphins, 29-10, in the A.F.C. championship game and earned a trip to their third consecutive Super Bowl.

TAMPA, Fla. — Rams kicker Matt Gay’s kick sneaked inside the left upright as the game’s final four seconds ticked away, giving Los Angeles a 30-27 win over Tampa Bay on Sunday to reach the N.F.C. championship game.

The Rams’ lead, which had ballooned to as many as 24 points, had evaporated late in the game, and Buccaneers running back Leonard Fournette scored the game-tying touchdown on the drive preceding the game-winning kick.

But Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford connected with Cooper Kupp on a 44-yard pass, then hustled his team downfield to spike the ball to set up Gay’s field goal.

The Rams, on paper, appeared to be the better team going into the game. They had an offense loaded with receiving weapons and an experienced quarterback, in Stafford, at the helm of the offense.

They had a defense with one of football’s best players, in Aaron Donald. And they had dealt with far fewer injuries than Tampa Bay.

But the Buccaneers had the ultimate advantage: the 44-year-old quarterback Tom Brady, who had played in more playoff games than most of the players left in the postseason and who is just a few years removed from helping his former team, the New England Patriots, overcome a 28-3 third-quarter deficit against Atlanta to win the Super Bowl.

Tampa Bay’s attempt at a comeback followed a game marred by an overall stagnant offense and defensive miscues. And though it looked like Brady could lead another dramatic postseason comeback, the Rams, led by Stafford and their defense, held on with the walk-off field goal. They will face the San Francisco 49ers, who beat the Green Bay Packers on Saturday, in the N.F.C. championship game.

The Rams never trailed, but Los Angeles gave the Buccaneers plenty of opportunities to chip away at its lead.

With less than five minutes remaining, Brady heaved a pass up to receiver Mike Evans, who had a one-on-one matchup against the star defensive back Jalen Ramsey, and Evans hauled in the pass for a 55-yard score. That made it a 7-point game.

In the third quarter, Tampa Bay recovered its second fumble of the game — it recovered four fumbles total — and turned the takeaway into 7 points. Fournette, who played in his first game since Week 15 after returning from injured reserve, punched the ball in from the 1-yard line.

That cut the Rams’ lead to 14 and energized Raymond James Stadium’s home fans, who’d grown quiet as their team struggled through the better part of three quarters.

Clinging to its two-possession lead, Los Angeles forced two Tampa Bay turnovers on downs late in the game to clinch its spot in the conference championship game.

It was far from a perfect game by either team. They combined for six turnovers.

The Rams faced little resistance from the Tampa Bay defense early and scored on three of their first four possessions.

Stafford, who’d had a topsy-turvy regular season characterized by 41 touchdowns and 17 interceptions, looked comfortable early.

He had nearly 200 passing yards before the end of the first quarter. He finished with 366 yards and two touchdowns, compared with 329 yards for Brady, who threw a touchdown and an interception.

On the Rams’ first touchdown drive, the Buccaneers had gifted them 15-yards thanks to a taunting penalty on Ndamukong Suh. Stafford hit an unlikely target, Kendall Blanton — he hadn’t had a touchdown all season — to give the Rams a 10-3 lead.

Los Angeles scored on their next possession after a blown coverage by the Buccaneers’ secondary, which struggled in coverage against the Rams when the teams met in Week 3.

The misstep allowed Kupp, who led the league in all of the major receiving categories in the regular season, to log a 70-yard score.

The Buccaneers were without their All-Pro right tackle Tristan Wirfs, who had an ankle injury, and it showed, Tampa Bay struggled in pass protection for much of the game.

Brady was sacked three times.

Led by safeties Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer, the Bills completed the regular season as the N.F.L. ‘s top-ranked defense, an element that has them viewed as one of the most balanced teams in the playoffs.

Buffalo finished first in several statistical categories, most notably fewest points allowed (289) and fewest yards allowed (4,637). The secondary was particularly smothering, surrendering only 165.9 yards per game and less than one passing touchdown per game. They did so even in the latter part of the season without the cornerback Tre’Davious White, a two-time Pro-Bowl selection, who tore an anterior cruciate ligament against the New Orleans Saints on Thanksgiving. A formidable defense is the perfect complement for the Bills, who are powered offensively by Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs.

This is the third matchup for these two teams in less than a year. Last January, Kansas City easily dispatched the Bills, 38-24, in the A.F.C. championship to reach the Super Bowl. In a viral photo, the Bills receiver Stefon Diggs watched alone from the sideline as confetti fell at Arrowhead Stadium while Kansas City celebrated.

In Week 5 this season, the Bills earned revenge, beating Kansas City, 38-20, behind Josh Allen’s 315 passing yards and three touchdowns. Kansas City is a small betting favorite this time, and oddsmakers expect it to be high-scoring, with the over-under set at 55 points.

Patrick Mahomes’s skyrocketing career has placed Kansas City atop the A.F.C., after Peyton Manning retired and Tom Brady’s departure from the New England Patriots created a void. A win against Buffalo could advance Kansas City in the championship game for the fourth consecutive season. While an impressive feat, the Patriots hold the remarkable record, having reached the game eight times between 2011 and 2018.

Kansas City lost to the Patriots, 37-31, in the 2018 A.F.C. championship in overtime at home, a close game they could have won in regulation had linebacker Dee Ford not lined up offsides before Brady threw a game-sealing interception in the fourth quarter. The next season, en route to their Super Bowl win, Kansas City overcame a 10-point deficit in the second quarter to beat the Tennessee Titans, 35-24. It defeated Buffalo, 38-24, last season before losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Super Bowl.

The Buccaneers’ hopes of turning things around after a dismal first half started to diminish in the third quarter after the Rams took a 27-3 lead.

But another fumble by the Rams, this time by Cooper Kupp, shifted some of the game’s momentum to the Buccaneers and energized the crowd at Raymond James Stadium.

After the turnover, Tampa Bay converted a play on fourth down, and the drive ended in a 1-yard touchdown run by Leonard Fournette.

Tampa Bay went three and out on its first possession of the quarter and, after allowing a 33-yard punt return, gave up another touchdown to the Rams. Los Angeles leads 27-13 heading into the final period.

Matthew Stafford, the Rams quarterback who notched the first playoff win of his career last week against the Cardinals, guided the Rams down the field thanks to a pass to tight end Kendall Blanton for 11 yards, a short pass to Kupp then a 10-yard completion to Odell Beckham Jr., who hauled in the pass and got two feet down as he was diving out of bounds.

Tampa Bay, which has been largely outplayed on offense, defense and special teams, put together a promising drive afterward, highlighted by a big play from Tom Brady to tight end Rob Gronkowski for a 42-yard gain.

But the Rams defense has pressured Brady consistently throughout the game, and the Buccaneers’ drive stalled at the 13-yard line. They settled for a 31-yard field goal from Ryan Succop.

The Buccaneers’ score at the end of the quarter cut the Rams’ lead to 14.

Through the first seven weeks of the season, it appeared that Kansas City was in jeopardy of securing only a low-seed or potentially even missing the playoffs outright. The team limped to a 3-4 start, hurt by uncharacteristic turnovers from quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who struggled to adapt to opponents’ strategies to counter their downfield passing attack and a defense that surrendered about 400 yards per game.

But injuries and parity within the A.F.C. caused the conference’s top teams to lose winnable games and fail to secure a strong footing, allowing Kansas City to regroup amid a favorable stretch in its schedule. It won nine of its last 10 games, and could have finished as the No. 1 seed if it had defeated the Cincinnati Bengals. Kansas City certainly rebounded, but early season mishaps may have given other teams a blueprint for success.

At the half, the visiting Rams have a 20-3 lead. The defending champions, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, looked the opposite of the team that cruised past the Eagles in the first round of the playoffs.

Tampa Bay punted on its first two drives and missed a field goal late in the second quarter. Tom Brady was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct in the second quarter. And with a chance to lead his team on a 2-minute scoring drive at the end of the half, Brady was intercepted by safety Nick Scott.

The Buccaneers’ most fortunate play of the half was a fumble recovery at the goal line after the Rams moved down the field off the Brady turnover. Running back Cam Akers had the ball punched out by Buccaneers defensive back Antoine Winfield Jr. But with just 19 seconds to work with and the ball at their own 1-yard line, the Buccaneers knelt on the ball and trotted to their locker room.

Matthew Stafford had plenty of success against the Buccaneers defense, with its secondary reeling with injuries throughout the season.

Stafford at times appeared to move the ball down the field relatively easily. He had a clean pocket and plenty of time to throw on a lot of his passes, a deviation from the Buccaneers’ pass rush that had been so good at getting to the quarterback during the regular season. Stafford had over 200 passing yards in the half.

On the Rams’ first touchdown, Stafford found tight end Kendall Blanton to give Los Angeles a 10-3 lead. On Los Angeles’ second score, a blown coverage by the Buccaneers secondary allowed Cooper Kupp to get behind the defense for a 70-yard touchdown, the longest play of the half.

The Rams will get the ball to start the third quarter.

Tom Brady was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct during the second quarter after complaining to the officials about what looked to be a hit to his face by Rams linebacker Von Miller.

The 15-yard penalty was the Buccaneers’ fourth penalty of the game. Brady had never been flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct or taunting in his career before then, according to ESPN.

The flag came in the midst of Brady and the Buccaneers’ most productive drive of the game so far. Brady converted on second-and-17 from the Rams’ 50-yard line, finding Leonard Fournette for a 19-yard gain, but stalled out three plays later. Ryan Succop missed the 48-yard field goal attempt, leaving the score at 17-3.

The Rams milked the clock on their possession, taking 6:41 on a 21-play drive which ended in a 40-yard field goal, putting Los Angeles up, 20-3.

Aaron Donald sacked Brady on first down of the next possession, backing Tampa Bay up to the 8-yard line, and Brady’s pass to Rob Gronkowski on second down was picked off by Rams safety Nick Scott.

Brady, who led the league in passing yards during the regular season has not done much in the first half against the Rams, with no touchdown throws, an interception and a sack. He has 112 yards on 10 of 22 passing.

He didn’t complete his first pass until the Buccaneers’ third possession of the game, a likely reason for his visible frustration.

At the two-minute warning, the Rams have a 20-3 lead. Tom Brady is a two-minute drill specialist, so we’ll see what he and the Buccaneers offense can put together after a mediocre half.

If the offensive line gives Brady time, routes in the middle of the field should be open. There were a few crossers on that last play. Middle linebacker is probably the sweet spot to attack on the Rams defense.

Tom Brady flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, which was followed by a chorus of boos at Raymond James Stadium.

The Los Angeles Rams have a 10-3 lead over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after the first quarter, with quarterback Matthew Stafford finding tight end Kendall Blanton for the game’s first touchdown.

The Rams, who drove down the field on their first possession to score a field goal, again moved inside the 10-yard line on their next drive.

Stafford found receiver Odell Beckham Jr. on a play-action pass, which was good for 9 yards, on the first play of the possession.

The Buccaneers haven’t gotten much pressure on Stafford early in the game. He has had a clean pocket and plenty of time to make his throws so far, completing 8 of 11 passes for 106 yards.

Defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh got pressure on Stafford to force an incompletion on the Rams’ touchdown drive but was flagged for taunting after the play.

The 15-yard penalty set up the score, and Tampa Bay responded with a field goal on their next drive.

Matthew Stafford began his first season as the quarterback of the Los Angeles Rams by throwing 11 touchdowns in through his first four games, validation that the 33-year-old was an upgrade over their former quarterback, Jared Goff.

For all of Stafford’s positives — his high-volume yardage, experience and arm strength — his backbreaking turnovers have stained a season in which he is expected to help the Rams contend for a Super Bowl.

Stafford finished the regular season with 41 touchdowns and 17 interceptions, tied with Jaguars rookie Trevor Lawrence for the league lead. Perhaps most distressing has been Stafford’s penchant for late game turnovers and interceptions returned for touchdown (he led the league with four this season).

That Stafford didn’t turn the ball over in the wild-card round against the Cardinals was a credit to the Rams’s taking an early lead, allowing them to rely on the run game. Stafford only threw the ball 17 times.

He’s facing a Tampa Bay secondary that, despite injuries, intercepted opposing quarterbacks times during the regular season and ranked as the top team in pressuring passers behind defensive tackle Vita Vea and Pro Bowl linebacker Shaquil Barrett.
