Extinction Rebellion Activists Chained in Symbolic Protest Outside French Finance Ministry

Activists from Extinction Rebellion staged a protest in front of France’s finance ministry on Tuesday, calling for the government to prioritize the environment in its recovery plans.

On Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron promised 15 billion Euros (US$16.9 billion) in new climate-related financing after meeting with a citizens’ group that he convened earlier this year in response to criticism that he wasn’t doing enough to battle climate change.

The citizens’ group gave him a new list of climate proposals drawn from a report it compiled, which includes recommendations on fighting CO2 emissions by discouraging solo car rides and proposing alternatives such as electric cars, as well as capping the harmful effects of air travel.

The group focused heavily on travel, which produces 30% of greenhouse gasses in France.
