As part of coronavirus relief efforts, Luca Di Pietro and his family set up Feed the Frontlines in New York City.
The initiative provides free, delicious meals to health-care workers on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic and keeps restaurant workers on the job.
“They all have a smile on their face,” says Luca.
He says medical workers tell him they don’t have time to eat.
Luca was fighting to keep his Italian restaurant running before the initiative.
He closed 4 of his 5 restaurants after the city’s eateries were limited
to takeout and delivery.
“I had to make the tough decision of letting go over 90 people,” he says.
Luca’s whole family is involved in the initiative. His daughter, Isabella, set up the website with her friend. His son, Ian, does all the math. His wife, Kate, coordinates deliveries.
Feed the Frontlines was inspired by Kate’s friend in Toronto.
Kate’s friend, Adair Roberts, wanted to help Luca’s business by purchasing meals and giving them to medical workers.
Now, anyone can buy health-care workers a meal through their website.
“This makes them realize that people from the outside are thinking about them,” says Luca.
Luca is gradually rehiring his staff.
“Find a purpose during these crazy times. We all can help.”
