Rep. Karen Bass: ‘It’s Open Season on Black Folks’

The Chairwoman of the US Congressional Black Caucus, Representative Karen Bass, said lawmakers were going to hold a town hall meeting and introduce legislation to combat racism against African Americans.

In the wake of several incidents, some captured on video, including the death of George Floyd while under police custody, Bass said “it’s feels like it’s open season on black folks.”

She also said that the pandemic has highlighted injustices in society, saying that African Americans who wear masks are targeted because they look “scary” and those that don’t have received citations at a higher rate than other racial groups.

Bass was clearly frustrated by viewing what she describes as the murder of Floyd in police custody.

“If that police officer had had his knee on the neck of a dog for eight minutes and in full view of the world, killed that dog, there would be outrage around the United States … Where is the outrage?” she said.

The case has attracted national headlines alongside the shooting of Ahmaud Arbery in a Georgia neighborhood in February and the death of Breonna Taylor, a black woman who was fatally shot in March by police who broke down her door.
