Banksy Boat: Migrants Transferred to Another Humanitarian Vessel; Italy Picks Up 49 People

Scores of people rescued by a ship funded by British street artist Banksy were transferred to another humanitarian vessel on Saturday while 49 migrants were rescued by the Italian coast guard.

The Sea-Watch 4 took onboard migrants from the M.V. Louise Michel rescue ship Saturday afternoon. In a series of tweets, the M.V Louise Michel said it had become stranded and was unable to move due to the amount of people it had rescued.

At one stage it was reported at least 219 people were onboard the ship. Women and children were among those onboard and in an adjacent dinghy, as well as the corpse of a migrant.

The Italian Coast Guard evacuated 49 people from the M.V Louise Michel, according to an update posted on the ship’s Twitter account. Among the arrivals were 32 women, 13 children and 4 men.

All remaining migrants were transferred onto the Sea-Watch 4 which now has 350 people onboard, the M.V Louise Michel said on Twitter.

The UNHCR and the International Organization of Migration said more than 200 rescued refugees and migrants needed to immediately get off the nonprofit search-and-rescue ship MV Louise Michel, which they said was “currently far beyond its safe carrying capacity.”
