Pope Holds First Public Audience at Vatican in 6 Months

Pope Francis on Wednesday resumed his weekly audience in a courtyard inside the Vatican, the first public audience there since late February.

“After many months we resume our meeting face to face, not screen to screen but face to face, this is beautiful,” said Francis to the reception in the San Damasco courtyard of the Apostolic Palace.

The pope held his last public audience on February 26, just days after the first locally transmitted coronavirus outbreaks were identified in northern Italy.

For more than 6 months the addresses were held from the pope’s private library.

The Vatican announced Tuesday that September’s audiences will be held in the San Damasco courtyard, a much smaller space than St Peter’s Square, where they were previously held in good weather.

Participation is open to anyone who wishes to attend, without the necessity of tickets, after a metal detector and a temperature check.
