Coronavirus: How Can Schools Reopen Safely?

Schools are struggling over how to reopen while keeping students, teachers and staff safe. At Baldwin High School on Long Island, New York, they have implemented safety measures that mirror schools across the country.

Shari Camhi, Baldwin Union Free School District Superintendent of Schools, says they are ready to reopen the schools in a matter of days, because in-person learning is extremely important to child development.

They have closed down the lockers so people don’t congregate around them. Everyone must wear masks and stay six feet apart.

The parents of kindergarten and elementary school children can choose to send their kids to school five days a week for in-person learning, or fully remote learning from home.

Parents of high and middle schoolers have the choice of sending their kids back to school for two or three days a week, with remote learning on the other days.

Earlier this summer, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo set a general metric to help measure when it was safe to bring students back, saying the state would allow a return in regions where fewer than 5% of people tested for COVID-19 came back positive.

He said schools would close if the regional infection rate topped 9%.

The guidelines vary from state to state.
