Monferrier Dorval: Haiti Clashes Escalate After Prominent Lawyer Shot Dead

Students from a law school in Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince took to the streets Tuesday to protest the murder of Monferrier Dorval, head of the bar association in the city.

Hundreds of university students clashed with police as they attempted to disrupt traffic along a main avenue by placing burning tires at intersections.

Police responded by firing tear gas into the crowd to disperse them.

Dorval was shot dead at his home on Friday night.

No one has claimed responsibility and there have been no arrests.

The students accuse the government of what they call complicit silence at the rise in violence and the renewed climate of insecurity which has once again become commonplace on Haiti.

Earlier this year a scathing United Nations report accused Haitian police of corruption and not protecting the population.

In February police exchanged gunfire with Haitian soldiers outside the national palace where police were protesting over low pay and poor working conditions.

The country is currently experiencing a political impasse without a parliament and is now run by decree under President Moise Jovenal.
