Magnitude 3.1 Earthquake Hits East Freehold, New Jersey

A rare magnitude 3.1 earthquake struck in East Freehold, New Jersey, early Wednesday morning.

The U.S. Geological Survey says it hit at about 2 a.m. and was centered 3 miles deep.

The event prompted people to take to social media to express their shock at the rare occurrence.

Trudie Campbell of Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, says the rumble sent her jumping off her bed.

“It almost sounded to me as if there were like two dump trucks filled with dirt riding in front of my apartment complex and like, just hitting every bump,” she said.

“It was so intense. And I grabbed my husband’s arm. He was knocked out, he was asleep. And I immediately thought, ‘Oh my God, my son is upstairs. Maybe I should go grab him.’ And then it was over, just like that,” she said.

David Rosenthal of Manalapan Township, New Jersey said his house was shaking.

“It sounded like a train,” he said. “But then I remembered I didn’t live near train tracks, so I was a little confused when I woke up. And then I asked my mother, she said it was an earthquake. So, she figured it out first.”

Hundreds of reports came in from as far as Philadelphia and Long Island, New York on the USGS’ “Did You Feel It?” map. But USGS geophysicist Robert Sanders said it’s unlikely to have caused anything other than damaged shelves or falling picture frames.

Sanders said there have been just two other quakes over 3.0 magnitude in the area since 1970.
