Trump: U.S. Making Progress on Virus as Europe Experiences ‘Big Spike’

President Donald Trump said Thursday the U.S. is making major progress in its fight against the coronavirus while he said Europe is experiencing “a very big spike.”

Speaking at a White House news conference, Trump highlighted a surge in COVID-19 cases in Europe to make the case that the United States is faring well.

“I really do believe we’re rounding the corner,” Trump asserted. “Yesterday, European nations experienced 50 percent more deaths than the United States,” he said, adding that the U.S. is “hopefully beyond our spike.”

The president also announced that U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will travel to Qatar Thursday evening for the beginning of the Afghan peace negotiations.

The long-awaited peace talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government’s negotiating team are to begin on Saturday in the Gulf Arab state of Qatar, the Taliban and Qatar’s foreign ministry said Thursday.
