South Korean Unification Minister Visits the Border Village Near North Korea

South Korea’s unification minister Lee In-young visited the border village of Panmunjom at the border with North Korea on Wednesday.

It was his first visit to the border zone since he was appointed to the post.

Lee inspected facilities on the South Korean side of the Joint Security Area (JSA) and met with officials stationed in Panmunjom.

In June, North Korea demolished the Inter-Korean Liaison Center which provided direct communication between the two nations, a decision Lee called ”regrettable.”

But he indicated that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appeared to be seeking to ease tensions.

“I perceive Chairman Kim Jong Un’s order to postpone his country’s anti-South Korea military actions as an effort to prevent tensions from heightening further,” Lee said.

”I hope that we get to propose the North about holding small-scale family reunions at Panmunjom,” he added.
