Esper Seeks More Navy Ships to Counter Threats from China in the Indo-Pacific
US Defense Secretary Mark Esper is calling for a shipbuilding program for the Navy to counter what he sees as a threat from China in the Indo-Pacific.
Speaking Wednesday at the Rand Corporation in Santa Monica, California, Esper said that China has been attempting to destabilize the area, particularly at sea.
Esper said in a speech that additions to the US Navy fleet should include both manned and unmanned surface and submarine craft.
He said that artificial intelligence would be a “game changing” technology and could “change the character of warfare as we know it.”
