LIVE: Amy Coney Barrett Picked by Trump to Push Supreme Court Further to the Right

President Donald Trump told associates he’ll nominate Judge Amy Coney Barrett to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court, said people familiar with the matter, aiming to cement conservative control of the court before Election Day.

If confirmed by the Senate, Barrett, 48, would become the third justice appointed to the nine-member high court by Trump. An Indiana-based federal appeals court judge, Barrett is known to be a devout Catholic with fervent anti-abortion views — the ideological opposite of Ginsburg, who died of complications from cancer on Sept. 18.

Two people familiar with the Senate negotiations said opening statements in the Judiciary Committee would likely be made on Oct. 12, with the following two days set aside for questioning. Outside witnesses would be introduced on Oct. 15.

Assuming Barrett clears the Republican-led panel, full Senate confirmation could go ahead the week of Oct. 26, the people said.
