Covid-19 Vaccine Near ‘Finish Line:’ U.S. Surgeon General

Efforts to develop a coronavirus vaccine are “almost at the finish line,” U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams says. But he can’t answer the question of when it will be ready for Americans to get.

Adams was in Houston Thursday for an update on the work to get a vaccine in place. He says four vaccines are now in Phase 3 trials.

He says he believes a safe Covid-19 vaccine will be developed by the end of this year or early in 2021.

“There are no safety corners being cut here,” he said.

Adams also encouraged people to get their flu shots this year, calling them safe and effective and “the greatest public health achievement of the last 50 years” in the U.S.

Johnson & Johnson has begun dosing up to 60,000 volunteers in a study of its Covid-19 vaccine, marking the first big U.S. trial of an inoculation that may work after just one shot.
