Covid-19 Upends Chuseok, South Korea’s Mid-Autumn Festival

South Korea urged citizens to stay home while celebrating Chuseok, the country’s Mid-Autumn holidays, this year to help prevent a surge in coronavirus cases.

“We plead you to spend this holiday at home and refrain from going outside or traveling if it’s not urgent,” said Jung Eun-kyong, Director of South Korea’s Centre for Disease Control.

A mass migration of populations towards home usually takes place every year during South Korean Thanksgiving holidays, but not this year.

Nightclubs and other high-risk places will be shut in Seoul during the holiday period that begins Wednesday as well.

South Korea has strengthened social distancing measures due to a major outbreak surrounding the greater capital region.
