Coronavirus: Young Doctors Demand Better Working Conditions in Spain

More than 30,000 people have been killed by Covid-19 in Spain since the start of the coronavirus outbreak and the country has been adding almost 50,000 new cases a week. Thousands of young doctors continued to strike in Barcelona, closing off an avenue and lying on bed sheets on the road to demand better working conditions and more days off.

Catalonia’s resident doctors have been on strike since Monday after a three-day strike the week before.

They demand that regional health authorities allow rest periods, that extra hours be paid correctly, that they receive more supervision and training and that their salaries be raised.

The coronavirus pandemic collapsed hospitals in March forcing all health workers and medical students available to join the frontline regardless of their specialization or experience.

Despite being applauded daily from balconies around Spain, medical professionals complain that compliments made publicly have not fixed old problems in their sector.

“This is the moment we should get support because after all we are the doctors of the future,” said Isa Zhang, a family and community doctor in her third year of residency at a Barcelona hospital.

“For us to be well trained is also good for the health of the general population.”
